What began as a dream more than 14 years ago is now a reality for the Baden family.

Born on a dairy farm in a small town in Germany, Gerhard Baden came to Australia as a young man and soon built a highly successful crane distribution business. On one of his many crane-sourcing trips to Japan, Gerhard experienced a meal that would change his life.

His first taste of Kobe (wagyu) beef sparked a fire in Gerhard. He couldn’t stop thinking about the sublime flavour and texture of this unique type of beef. On the plane home, he decided that he would start his own wagyu beef farm when he retired from the crane business to share this flavourful experience with others. Sure enough, when the time came in 2007, Gerhard purchased 230 acres of prime grazing land overlooking the sea and added 20 fullblood wagyu cows and a bull.

With this relatively modest start, Gerhard began his highly particular process of farming, which was based on science and put the animals’ welfare at the heart of every decision.

This meant a steep learning curve but, with the help of veterinary science experts from Sydney University, Gerhard has created a wagyu-rearing program that’s second to none.
