Animal welfare

At Schottländers Wagyu, we’re creating a product that meets the highest standards of animal welfare. We know what it takes to ensure our animals grow strong and enjoy a stress-free life.

Calm, happy cattle can gain up to a kilo a day. The quality of the meat improves with the quality of the animal’s life which is why we’ve invested substantially in creating a low-stress environment for the cattle. We’re all about resort-style living and careful handling for each animal according to principles established by Dr Temple Grandin, professor of animal science at Colorado State University and proponent for the humane treatment of livestock.

 This includes:

  • high-quality grass and supplements so they can graze at will

  • automated massage brushes that feel fantastic and keep their hides free of annoying insects

  • meditation music played 24/7 around the massage brushes

  • non-slip walkways for animal safety

  • calm, quiet mustering for vaccinations and drenching

  • electronic tracking of animals so any issues can be identified and managed early

  • animals managed with support from vets at Sydney University to minimise stress or discomfort

  • planned on-site abattoir to remove the need for cattle to travel in trucks for slaughter.

At Schottländers Wagyu, we know that animal welfare must come first. We treat our cattle the way we’d like to be treated, with the best food, most comfortable living conditions, and a stress-free life.

Schottländers cattle are vaccinated and drenched according to a strict regime managed with support from Associate Professor John House, from Sydney University's Livestock Veterinary Teaching and Research Unit, to maintain maximum health and development. The vaccination program is unique, designed to overcome the naturally weak immune system of wagyu cattle, and includes the application of six vaccines to prevent bacterial and viral diseases.

The result? Happy cattle that deliver the highest-quality, tastiest, and tenderest wagyu beef.
